MEDICATION ASSISTED TREATMENT

  What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment? Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a type of treatment where medications are utilized in addition to behavioral therapy. The patient who undergoes detox and addiction recovery may be prescribed certain medications to help them restabilize upon quitting drugs or alcohol, if necessary. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Medication-Assisted Treatment is “the use of FDA- approved medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a ‘whole-patient approach to the treatment of substance use disorders.” Currently, there are three drugs approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid dependence: buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone.
